Online Enrollment
How can I enroll?
The Academy of Art University maintains an open admission policy for all persons who wish to
obtain an education in visual arts. You may register, pay tuition, and apply for admission online,
by phone, or by fax. If you are a new student you must first apply. Continuing students need only
submit the registration form by first getting the class number and title from the online schedule,
and then completing the form.
Students who wish to apply as a candidate for the MFA Graduate Studies program must also write a
statement of intent and submit a portfolio that shows a comprehensive body of work, with a level of
specialization representing the student's chosen discipline. In addition, official transcripts are
required showing completion of a four year college degree resulting in a BA, BS, or BFA degree.

Can I transfer credits from another school towards an Academy of Art
University program?
A maximum of sixty-six (66) units may be applied toward the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
programs. A maximum of thirty (30) units may be transferred toward the forty-five (45) required
Liberal Arts units. A transfer evaluation will be performed prior to the start of the student's
second semester. In order to transfer credits toward a major, a student must have a portfolio
review with their Department Director within the first term at the college. It is recommended that
students communicate with an academic advisor to confirm all transfer units.
MFA students may transfer a maximum of six (6) credits from graduate studies at other
institutions for credit toward the degree. The determination whether to give credit for previous
studies is made by the Academy. Credit is only transferred to the Academy if the courses taken at
the previous institution are relevant to the student’s studies and independent Final Project.
The Academy takes the following factors into consideration in making this determination:
- The course description published in the other institutions materials
- Number of credit hours awarded for the work done
- The grade received in the course
- The work project generated by student from the course
