Module 2: Session 3

Croquis Development Drawing Techniques

Assignment 2.1: Blind Contour and Cheating a Little

With fashion drawing and the development of the Croquis, the Blind Contour method helps you see once again how the figure is put together. Understanding how the clothes will drape on the figure and being able to draw this comes from understanding the human figure.

In blind contour drawing we are not concerned with perfect renditions, or using light and shadow to define a “form.” Rather it is with contour line only - which allows for a more accurate, and alive drawing. We are working towards developing the line and keeping this a clean approach in understanding the form through line and training the eye to SEE - by not looking at your paper as you draw, thus drawing the contour "blind."

Let’s review how blind contour works: Do not look at your paper, only at the model. As your eye follows the contour of the figure, let your hand move along with your eye, not picking up your charcoal or pencil from the paper until you have gone all the way around the figure. If you like, you can place a finger of your opposite hand on the page to gauge where your line started.

6 Poses for Blind Contour Drawings [+]

After blind contour, we move on in the process to “cheating a little.” This is where you make the shift from not looking at all at your paper, to looking a little bit. You “cheat a little.” It starts when you draw your first line blind and then glance at your paper to find the place in which you are going to start your next line. You will mostly be looking at the model and not at your paper. Remember, as you lift your charcoal from the page, you can glance at your paper to get your bearings for the next line, then as you begin to draw, keep your eye on the contour of the body.

Using the same images that you did in blind contour, do a “cheating a little” drawing of three of these poses.

Assignment 2.1: Blind Contour and Cheating a Little

Post your best two blind contour and best two cheating a little drawings (for a total of four) and post in the appropriate discussion topic.
